At approximately 6:00 p.m. Firefighter William B. Carlton was running with fellow Members of Junior Fire Company No. 2 ,pulling their hand drawn apparatus, and responding to a chimney fire at Colonel John McPherson’s residence on Briens’ Row, Court Street.
Firefighter Carlton reportedly became exhausted, fell down in the street, and died.
Firefighter Carlton was one of the 3 founding members of Junior Fire Co.No 2 and served as their first vice president.
Firefighter William B.Carlton, the first recorded Line Of Duty Death of a Firefighter in the State of Maryland, was 24 years old and had served 2 years.
